One afternoon Jonathan and I visited the Mezcalería Mr. Mares which is close to the magical village Nombre de Dios. Nombre de Dios was recently elevated to the status of a Pueblo Mágico due to some waterfalls close to it and another famous place where they produce Mezcal. Mezcal, a Mexican spirit drink typically containing 40 % alcohol by volume, is made from the flesh of various types of agaves. The most famous Mezcal is the Tequila, which is distilled in the surroundings of the city Tequila in the Mexican federal state Jalisco exclusively from the blue agave. Mezcal is mainly produced in the region around the city of Oaxaca. Officially also the states Guerrero, Durango, San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas are allowed to produce it.
The Mezcalería we visited is actually no tourist attraction, it was only a lucky coincidence that we landed at this Mezcalería and did not end up at the much more famous one located a few kilometres further on the other side of the motorway. The two only owners, operators as well as workers explained us little bit about the process from the agave to the finished alcoholic beverage and let us taste a few glasses of their latest Mezcal. The two guys are supported by the donkey, which bears the name Güero and who likes to not only help them transporting the agaves but also eat them.
