The Cerro del Cubilete is a mountain in the municipality of Silao, in the state of Guanajuato. At its top is the monumental Cristo de la Montaña / Santuario de Cristo Rey, a 20 meter high Christ monument built in the 1940s, but an earlier monument dates back to the 1920s. In 1928 the monument was bombarded and dynamited by order of the then President of Mexico.
The sanctuary of Christ is one of the most visited in Mexico, after the basilica of Santa María de Guadalupe and Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos. Every January 5, a mass is celebrated in the church courtyard, where thousands of horseback riders with their banners representing their villages attend. Also, every first Sunday of the month of October, the Monument to Christ the King is visited by thousands of pilgrims. On a day with a good view, one can see all the surrounding cities from the Cerro del Cubilete, unfortunately we did not have this luck. There is a little museum up the hill which explains the history of the monument as well as its predecessor statues.
