Un Domingo en CDMX (A Sunday in Mexico City)

There are a lot of great things to do in Mexico City on a Sunday. The day after my tour to the Nevado de Toluca I decided to go for a bicycle ride on Reforma and a trip to Xochimilco. Each Sunday from 8:00 to 14:00 some of the city's main roads including Reforma are closed to cars and are only available to cyclists and other non-motorised road users. It is possible to rent bicycles for free and so did Richi, a good friend of Jenny from Guadalajara, and I.

In the afternoon we were heading towards Xochimilco to meet up with Jenny. Xochimilco is known for its canals which are left from what was an extensive lake and canal system that connected most of the settlements of the prehispanic population. You can ride on trajineras, colorful boats in almost any part of the approx. 170 km of canals. Nowadays it counts as a World Heritage Site. The land surfaces in between the canals are called chinampas and were once put to agricultural use.
